Backup - old Artist Statement

"In an increasingly automated, autonomous, robotic and digitized world, painting offers a human experience. It does what technology cannot. Painting communicates on a primal level.

The imperfect markings of the human hand. The unspoken communication of color, the sensuality of thick and thin paint, chaos controlled, the quivering line, unexpected color; all are desirable qualities. The choice of subject matter, is not picked by committee or algorithm but chosen by the artist with the artist’s unique vision. Done well, a painting can communicate on a deep, personal and human level."

I paint figures and I paint landscapes, both in oil. Often the two subject areas are combined. Balancing abstract areas of bold color with tightly rendered areas of focus represents my style.

In all work, the humble, the truthful, the candid are sought.

Oil paint offers the ultimate expression. It can be thick and create texture. It can be transparent and fresh; it can be full of drips and accidents, the richness of color unsurpassed. This painterly quality, and subject matter chosen, is used to capture the human experience in all its imperfection.
